The Importance of Life Jackets
Life jackets are essential for any boater. They should be worn at all times. LIfe vests can save your life if you fall in the water. It will prevent you from drowning. Also if you fall in the water the bright orange color will show other boaters were you are, so they don't accidentally hit you. You should wear a life jacket at all times while riding a boat.
Types of Life Jackets
There are five different types of life jackets.
Type I life jackets provide the most flotation and will keep a person's head above water if they were to fall unconscious in the water. These are the best life jackets for areas where it is rocky, rough, and where help might take a while to get to you.
Type II life jackets also provide a good amount of flotation and will keep your head above the water most of the time. It is more comfortable than Type 1 and it allows more mobility.
Type III life jackets are the most comfortable of all and are great for water sports.
Type IV life jackets come in three different types that are all meant for calm waters. The ring buoy can be thrown to someone that has fallen in the water and is out of reach. The cushion can be used as a seat cushion and can also be thrown. And the actual life vest are great for backups but will most likely not keep an unconscious person's head above water. Type 4 life jackets are not meant for passengers that have any risk of falling unconscious.
Type V life jackets are only specified for a certain activity labeled on the vest. These activities include kayaking, water skiing, windsurfing, and deck suits.
